STERILE PROCEDURES

We as a studio operate to the highest possible standards of hygiene – what we consider to be safe operating levels are above and beyond Health & Safety requirements and are based on the latest medical information.

Autoclave sterilisation machine

At our studio, we maintain a separate, specialised sterilisation process exclusively for new, unworn jewellery using dedicated ultrasonics and autoclaves.

This jewellery-only set up ensures that each piece is sterilised without any interaction with tool sterilisation, upholding the highest hygiene standards. Our jewellery autoclave is designed to be quiet, quick and efficient, allowing us to prepare any piece from our displays for immediate use, opening up your initial options to hundreds of beautiful pieces we have available. By keeping jewellery and tool sterilisation completely separate, we ensure that every client receives both safe and stunning results.

Unlike a lot of studios, we prioritise client safety by thoroughly sterilising every single piece of jewellery, whether its retail or piercing, and have done since 1998. Each item undergoes a meticulous sterilisation process in our jewellery-only ultrasonic and autoclave, ensuring that it is completely safe, clean and ready for use. This means that any piece you purchase or select has been carefully prepared to the highest hygiene standards, and will be sold to you in an individual sterilised packet. No plastic bags and alcohol wipes here!

We operate to the levels required by the APP (Association of Professional Body Piercers)

We are not APP members because we will pierce people under 18 years of age with parental consent.

The latest guidelines from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health recommend the use of irrigated water in an autoclave as it is bacteria-free; we have sourced and now use this water despite the extra cost.

At Kalima we use a new needle per client and EEC-compliant piercing jewellery. All jewellery sold for retail or used for piercing is clinically sterilised in separate equipment to piercing tools; tools (clamps) are rigorously sterilised between customers.

Our piercing sterility procedure

1. All tools are pre-soaked in a medical cleaning solution which is designed to remove human matter (skin, saliva, sweat etc) from medical instruments.

2. We then ultrasonic all instruments for 30 minutes (ultrasonic manufacturers recommend 15) in an industrial ultrasonic cleaner. An ultrasonic cleaner removes all loose matter from tools by creating thousands or bubbles that bombard the surface and encase the loose matter in the detergent, when it will sink to the bottom of the cleaner.

3. The tools are then placed in a cold sterilising solution. This is designed to sterilise sensitive medical instruments that would be damaged by the heat, steam or pressure of an autoclave.

4. Finally the tools are placed in special medical bags that allow them to be sterilised inside: This will keep them sterile for up to five years if necessary.

5. The bagged tools are then autoclaved.

Our tool sterilising and processing room is a dedicated, isolated space separated from the rest of the studio, ensuring a strict standard of cleanliness and eliminating any risk of client cross contamination or contact with used equipment.

In this sterilising room, we use medical grade ultrasonics and autoclaves and other professional cleaning equipment to thoroughly sanitise every tool before use. By keeping this process completely separate, we’re able to maintain a sterile environment throughout the entire studio, prioritising the health and safety of our clients. This careful attention to hygiene is a cornerstone of our commitment to providing safe, high quality piercings in a clean and controlled environment.
