Can you have them done ? Can they be done together? Are there any risks involved?

As fillers are highly popular and we get asked many time over the years about fillers and piercings. We wrote this article a few years ago explaining why we can or can't pierce you, but thought we would share it again

If you have a well healed lip piercing (4+ months) then having fillers shouldn't imposed any risks. However it may change the positioning and how your piercing sits within the body if an even amount of filler isn't applied to either side.

This isn't a risk but it is something to think about if symmetry and aesthetics are important to you.

Having a new piercing done when you have had fillers is completely different ! You cannot have lip piercings done if you have filler at the time. This includes through the lip itself or very low lip piercings.

You need to wait until all the filler has dissolved, plus a little extra time to ensure it's completely broken down and the tissue has settled back.

Some filler can take 6-12 months to completely breakdown and your lipos need to be filler free for 3+ months

The reasons for this are as follows:

  • The filler can leak out of or into the body. It can leak out of the piercing itself, or into another part of the lip or tissue in the area. this can cause disfigurement or uneven/lumpy lips

  • If a piercing becomes infected the filler will allow the infection to spread easier and deeper into the lip and tissue. This can also cause disfigurement or uneven lips.

Particular piercings have an increased risk of rejection (vertical, labret or ashley) due to the filler expanding the tissue; this compresses the blood vessels, restricting the blood flow and can put increased pressure (or pushing) on the jewellery.

This can cause disfigurement and excessive scarring

Although most filler dissolves by itself, some filler can be in the body for years without completely breaking down, This is something to keep in mind if lip piercings are of interest to you.

This includes dahlia's or other facial piercings if filler has also been put into these areas as well

Obviously these are potential risks and not an every case scenario and there will be other studios that are happy to do theses piercings......but as a responsible piercing studio we stand by our clients best interests and do not compromise on your safety
